Manchester City Owns England’s U17 World Cup Squad

Manchester City placed five players on England’s U17 World Cup roster. That’s more than any other Premier League academy.

Chelsea and Tottenham each contributed three. City’s five include Dante Headley, Harrison Miles, Ryan McAidoo, Reigan Heskey, and Kaden Braithwaite.

Teenagers Already Playing Senior Football

Several squad members have already broken into first-team football. That’s unusual for this age group.

Tottenham’s Luca Williams-Barnett became Spurs’ youngest ever EFL Cup player at 16 years, 11 months and 24 days. He debuted against Doncaster Rovers in September.

Williams-Barnett has 18 goals and nine assists in 17 U17 appearances this season.

Walsh Breaks Chelsea’s European Record

Reggie Walsh set Chelsea’s record as the youngest European starter at 16 years and 200 days during the Conference League semi-finals. He surpassed the previous mark by nearly five months.

Manager Enzo Maresca called Walsh his favorite academy player, praising how the teenager “is doing things that I’m demanding to the other players, but he is doing those things without me asking him to do that.”

Arsenal’s Max Dowman won’t be in Qatar. The 15-year-old midfielder was promoted directly to England’s U19 squad, skipping U17 entirely. He became the youngest ever U19 goalscorer against Wales in October.

The Tournament

The 48-team tournament begins November 4 when England faces Venezuela. Haiti follows on November 7, then Egypt on November 10. The final is November 27.

England won this tournament in 2017 with Phil Foden winning the Golden Ball. That squad produced multiple senior internationals.

But England also crashed out at the group stage in 2023 against Uzbekistan. Youth talent doesn’t guarantee tournament success.

City’s five-player contribution reflects years of academy investment. The question is whether that dominance translates when the tournament starts.
